A Doll—man’s semblance shaped—is a vessel void.
By very voidness doth it stand most noble.
In this world of the hollow cicada-shell, the life of man is unsure:
now in rejoicing, now in lament;
and living he is, and dying he is.
Yet the Doll’s life abideth unwasting.
Though human hands once wrought the Doll,
man himself is but a passer before the Doll’s august presence.
